8:04 pm            robgokee:            So, as a composer, I personally like to get into the process of a show or film early, preferably at script stage. #scriptchat
8:04 pm            AlexisNiki:            @robgokee How many projects are you working on THIS week? #scriptchat

8:04 pm            janetvaneeden:            RT @robgokee: So, as a composer, I personally like to get into the process of a show or film early, preferably at script stage. #scriptchat
8:04 pm            AlexisNiki:            @robgokee As the script is still being written, or once script is locked? #scriptchat
8:05 pm            filmutopia:            #scriptchat I've worked with composers on my projects, so I'll take a back seat on this one, let other people ask questions
8:05 pm            sweettweenie:            #scriptchat hello, lurking tonight
8:05 pm            robgokee:            @AlexisNiki No lie, writing for @bwthefilm was one of my fave experiences in my career. Loved what came out of the collaboration #scriptchat
8:05 pm            robgokee:            @AlexisNiki I've done it both ways. I scored a feature where I read every draft of the script as it was being written. #scriptchat
8:06 pm            z_cochrane:            i'm following #scriptchat because @robgokee is in it and it seems really interesting.
8:06 pm            DreamsGrafter:            @robgokee Do you read a screenplay in terms of tone and/or pace? #scriptchat
8:06 pm            robgokee:            My job is all about Themes. When I read a script, whether TV or Film, I immediately start choosing who & what gets a theme. #scriptchat
8:06 pm            DreamsGrafter:            Great pleasure! RT @robgokee: @DreamsGrafter Actually, getting me outside is the hard part;) Thanks for having me! #scriptchat
8:07 pm            DreamsGrafter:            RT @robgokee: My job is all about Themes. When I read a script, whether TV or Film, I immediately start choosing who & what gets a theme. #scriptchat
8:07 pm            AlexisNiki:            I'm SO excited to hear that! RT @robgokee No lie, writing for @bwthefilm was one of my fave experiences in my career. #scriptchat
8:07 pm            robgokee:            @DreamsGrafter Tone is definitely huge. Very often, when I'm reading a script, I get musical idea in my head. #scriptchat
8:07 pm            robgokee:            @filmutopia How was the process for you? #scriptchat
8:08 pm            yeah_write:            @robgokee Hi Rob, thanks for being our guest today. #scriptchat
8:08 pm            TheWriteScript:            What things should we have in our scripts that you need, or shouldn't be included? #Scriptchat
8:08 pm            AlexisNiki:            @robgokee Have you ever scored music before filming? To set tone or give the director something to inspire him/her, say? #scriptchat
8:08 pm            filmutopia:            @robgokee the process was very good, mainly because I knew exactly what I wanted the music to do #scriptchat
8:08 pm            robgokee:            For instance, when I was scoring @goldtheseries Night of the Zombie King, I scored the first 2 episodes before I got the scripts #scriptchat
8:09 pm            DreamsGrafter:            @robgokee The tone of a script isn't something that's discussed openly re screenwriting. Cld u elaborate the importance of tone? #scriptchat
8:09 pm            robgokee:            Reading the scripts for 3-6 was hugely important to how the character's themes developed. #scriptchat
8:09 pm            DreamsGrafter:            @robgokee How does a screenwriter fail to deliver the tone clearly? And why it cld be difficult for you? #scriptchat
8:09 pm            DreamsGrafter:            RT @robgokee: @DreamsGrafter Tone is definitely huge. Very often, when I'm reading a script, I get musical idea in my head. #scriptchat
8:10 pm            robgokee:            @AlexisNiki I've only done that once or twice, it's more rough outlines for the writer/director so that we can start "molding." #scriptchat
8:10 pm            sweettweenie:            #scriptchat @robgokee do you prefer to work with a specific genre or type of script, or would you consider anything?
8:10 pm            DreamsGrafter:            *waves* RT @janetvaneeden: @DreamsGrafter @robgokee Hi Mina. Lurking and listening from the South East corner of the world. :) #Scriptchat

8:11 pm            dodgyjammer:            @robgokee do you have a specific genre/format you prefer to compose for? #scriptchat
8:11 pm            robgokee:            @DreamsGrafter When I scored the feature "Amhurst," the tone of the film was more suspensful, but the director wanted the... #scriptchat
8:11 pm            robgokee:            @DreamsGrafter score to be "Horror." So I had to read the script and approach it from a diff perspective. #scriptchat
8:11 pm            sweettweenie:            RT @robgokee: @DreamsGrafter Tone is definitely huge. Very often, when I'm reading a script, I get musical idea in my head. #scriptchat
8:11 pm            AlexisNiki:            @robgokee You did a great job with the themes/tone in Bitchy Witchy. Gave me another viewpoint--which was so cool! #scriptchat
8:12 pm            robgokee:            @DreamsGrafter Part of the screenwriter "delivering" the tone correctly is sitting down & discussing it after I've read it once. #scriptchat

8:14 pm            robgokee:            A score, like a story, usually is started by me and then leads me to the place it needs to go. It comes from the story. #scriptchat
8:15 pm            AlexisNiki:            Me too! RT@robgokee @BWtheFilm was interesting, b/c the score ended up in a place I didn't expect, and fell in love with. #scriptchat

8:17 pm            robgokee:            @thetissuetalk Time. There's so much less time, so you have to develop things quickly. I work better that way, actually. #scriptchat
8:18 pm            Bang2write:            Hello everyone, lurking here #scriptchat

8:18 pm            JoshKEvans:            @robgokee Some film composers r more minimalist and give the music a lighter touch even with thrillers. Which style do u prefer? #scriptchat
8:18 pm            robgokee:            @1story2go Hi! #scriptchat

8:19 pm            robgokee:            @AlexisNiki @alli_and_that It depends on a few factors. The preferences of the director, time period, location (ie Paris). #scriptchat

8:20 pm            yeah_write:            @robgokee How far in advance would a filmmaker need to contact you? #scriptchat
8:20 pm            robgokee:            @JoshKEvans I like both, for me it depends on a) what the film/show needs & b) what the director wants. #scriptchat
8:20 pm            aaronkaiser:            RT @cartermason: Hey, composer and professional smart-ass @robgokee is on #scriptchat ... Check it out.

8:20 pm            AnneMarieAngelo:            @robgokee Q. about your faves: What are some recent feature scores you've enjoyed listening to as a composer? #scriptchat
8:21 pm            DreamsGrafter:            @robgokee When you compose & devise rhythm of soundtrack what do you go by? Dramatic beats? Tension w/in scene? #scriptchat
8:21 pm            robgokee:            @yeah_write I love the whole process; Preproduction, Production, Post, so ideally I'd love to get in after the first draft. #scriptchat
8:21 pm            aaronkaiser:            Emphasis on the "professional smart-ass" part. ~ RT @cartermason: Hey, composer and professional smart-ass @robgokee is on #scriptchat
8:21 pm            robgokee:            @yeah_write That rarely happens, but before I get video, I usually ask to read the script. #scriptchat
8:22 pm            AnneMarieAngelo:            RT @DreamsGrafter:@robgokee When you compose & devise rhythm of soundtrack what do you go by? Dramatic beats?Tension w/in scene? #scriptchat
8:22 pm            robgokee:            @AnneMarieAngelo The King's Speech, Battle: LA (b/c Brian Tyler is my fave) and Mansell's Black Swan. #scriptchat
8:22 pm            AlexisNiki:            @robgokee What are some basics that you wish show runners/writers/directors understood better about the composing process? #scriptchat
8:23 pm            dodgyjammer:            @AlexisNiki good question! @robgokee #scriptchat
8:23 pm            robgokee:            @DreamsGrafter Yes;) It's both, very much abt helping build the drama but not overemphasize it. Dialogue is the most important. #scriptchat
8:23 pm            hethfen:            @robgokee hi! have you ever accepted a project based on the treatment or other summary doc (ie pre-script stage)? #scriptchat
8:23 pm            DreamsGrafter:            RT @robgokee: @DreamsGrafter Yes;) It's both, very much abt helping build the drama but not overemphasize it. Dialogue is the most important. #scriptchat
8:24 pm            aaronkaiser:            @robgokee not scoring any @CelebrateTheWeb pilots then? #scriptchat
8:24 pm            JoshKEvans:            @robgokee Has a director ever asked you to do something that made you think, "WTF. This is ridiculous." #scriptchat
8:24 pm            robgokee:            @AlexisNiki Think about other scores you love that fit the tone of your script, & why. Give your composer examples. #scriptchat
8:25 pm            robgokee:            @hethfen Good question. Yes. I took on @SOLOtheSeries based solely on @JonathanNail's pitch to me. He was incredible. #scriptchat
8:25 pm            DreamsGrafter:            @robgokee My nxt q was about dialogue. For me dialogue is largely about rhythm. How does dialogue work for you? #scriptchat
8:25 pm            yeah_write:            A certain political ad mayber? lol RT @JoshKEvans: @robgokee Has a director ever asked you to do something that made you think...#scriptchat
8:25 pm            alliecine:            @robgokee Just popping in to say hi to everyone (while in the middle of working on @ABoysLifeFilm stuff) #scriptchat
8:26 pm            AlexisNiki:            @robgokee Gotcha! Next time, I'll have more examples for you. #scriptchat
8:26 pm            robgokee:            @aaronkaiser I'm not sure yet if I have time for any @CelebrateTheWeb stuff, shooting my own webseries w/@robbpadgett in April. #scriptchat
8:26 pm            randomray1983:            @robgokee Ever had a dir. change his mind on the style of the sound halfway (or later) on production? If so what did u do? #scriptchat
8:26 pm            robgokee:            @JoshKEvans Yeah, @davidnett is like that constantly. Just kidding. #scriptchat
8:27 pm            alli_and_that:            Do you always like examples or do you occasionally work from scratch? #scriptchat
8:27 pm            DreamsGrafter:            @robgokee How do you think screenwriters can use music to help their writing? #scriptchat
8:27 pm            robgokee:            I always defer to the director, b/c it's their baby. It's my job to add the musical character to it, but it's not my creation. #scriptchat
8:28 pm            yeah_write:            RT @robgokee: I always defer 2 director, b/c it's their baby. It's my job 2 add the musical char 2 it, but it's not my creation. #scriptchat

8:28 pm            robgokee:            @DreamsGrafter It's important b/c I need to know where the musical rests need to be, or if the dialogue is intense, when to add. #scriptchat

8:28 pm            DreamsGrafter:            Already halfway through Euro #Scriptchat and @robgokee is totally on top of tonight's questions. Thanks Rob!

8:29 pm            robgokee:            @yeah_write @JoshKEvans HA. The score for that was straightforward: Cowboy Music. #scriptchat

8:29 pm            robgokee:            @randomray1983 Twice. Once w/Amhurst, and once with @sabra14's short film "Thank You, Mr Patterson." Both times, the score was #scriptchat

8:30 pm            robgokee:            @randomray1983 better the second time around. I love the rewriting process, it's where the "real" score is born. #scriptchat
8:30 pm            aaronkaiser:            @robgokee what's the most common mistake that directors working with a composer for the first time make? #scriptchat
8:30 pm            yeah_write:            @robgokee @JoshKEvans But the ad was over the top, I think the score was perfect. Definitely cowboy. #scriptchat
8:30 pm            AlexisNiki:            @robgokee I know you score a lot of web series, but how many use original music? #scriptchat
8:30 pm            jlw3st:            RT @alli_and_that: I'm not going to lie. I'm pretty excited about #scriptchat drinks tonight. If you're a film-y peep and in London, come! http://bit.ly/fLxmur

8:40 pm            robgokee:            @yeah_write Honestly, it's making the time I have work. Sometimes it's a week, or 3 days for an episode, or 4 wks for a feature. #scriptchat
8:41 pm            AlexisNiki:            I know, I know! The characters' hormones! @DreamsGrafter @robgokee What influences the melody for you? #scriptchat
8:41 pm            robgokee:            @randomray1983 I really dislike temp scores, b/c often the director falls in love with it, and you have to copy parts of it. #scriptchat
8:41 pm            yeah_write:            @robgokee Thanks for the time answer, about what I expected. And also depends on director I'm sure. #scriptchat

8:44 pm            DreamsGrafter:            @robgokee Wow, that's interesting. Melody first. I guess it's the same as character = story. Melody = focus of score. #scriptchat
